Why You Should Read This Book

This monthly column by Bethany Hawkins will highlight one or two books in the library.

Karen Kingsbury and Christian Fiction

As most people know, I am a voracious reader.  I always have a book with me at home, when I travel, and even at work.  If I run out of new books to read, I will reread one of my favorite books at home.  I read primarily fiction.  I love a good story . . . but I have had a hard time finding a Christian fiction author I like.  I tried to read several Christian books, but they were all the same.  They were all formulaic Christian romances.

But a couple of months agao, Diane Kelley told me about the Karen Kingsbury books in the library.  She raved so much about how good they were that I decided to give her a try.  Diane was right.  Kingsbury writes great fiction with a Christian message.  I read One Tuesday Morning and Ocean's Apart -- both are in the church library.  They were both engaging and had an underlying Christian message that did not seem forced or cliched.

One Tuesday Morning is about September 11, 2001 and deals with the events in the Twin Towers and the aftermath.  It is not easy to read, but was an captivating story that left me wondering what happened to these characters.  Evidently, so did other readers.  Kingsbury wrote a sequel, Beyond Tuesday Morning, which is a new addition to the library.

Ocean's Apart deals with a family torn apart by the realization of an affair and how they deal with the child who was the result of the affair.  While parts of the book are very emotional, the families in both books learn through tragedies to lean on God, some for the first time.  There are several other titles by Karen Kingsbury in the library and I look forward to reading them.

If you are looking for a good book, check out the church library.  I will be happy to recommend something for you to read -- Just stop by the library before or after our services.
